We finally have the official confirmation from government that the Professional Engineers Registration scheme will be limited to “structural and fire safety engineers working on buildings that meet the Medium, High and Very High Building Complexity criteria specified in the National Construction Code”.
While they reserved the option to expand the application of the scheme, they note that is limited to where such expansion is supported by the evidence.
In short, manufacturers and product designers in South Australia will be able to do what we do so well, our way, and without having to restructure the way we work, without the cost, and without the exacerbation of the skills shortage and the scrapping of good staff that the scheme would have caused. This is a win for SA industry.
The same can not be said of Victoria and Queensland. South Australia has benefited from having an industry association like Electronics Industry Development Adelaide (EIDA) to inform our elected government and to represent the manufacturing and technology industry to government. EIDA was able to facilitate and co-ordinate representations from manufacturers and design companies in South Australia that represent over $1bn in annual revenue and 2000 employees in just the short window allowed for public comment on the proposal. The work did not stop there. I am particularly grateful to those industry leaders who joined me in meeting with government and continued to make representations and those that prepared submissions.
I’d like to thank all those that worked towards this outcome.
For those involved in the electronics industry in South Australia you may like to support your industry association by joining. You can email contact@eida.asn.au. EIDA membership is about half the cost of registering a single engineer in Victoria and a lot more valuable. Our membership year is January to December so now is the time to join for 2024.
