The regional economy of Adelaide with its past dependence on ‘industrial-age’ (high volume) manufacturing faces an immediate challenge. To maintain our high wages and living standards we one attractive option is the transition to small-volume, high value-adding, customisable, intellectual property (IP) based ‘knowledge-age’ manufacturing. Fortunately Adelaide has its established electronics design and manufacturing industry, so how can our government manage and encourage the transition, or is it totally the responsibility of the industry itself?

Thank you for posting and welcome to the EIDA forum.
I think a lot of the transition has been happening in the industry already – and in some ways that makes it less visible as there are few stand out representative organizations like “Mitsubishi” and “Holden” were in the auto industry (despite the supply chain here being much more than about these two). The larger number of smaller players makes an association like this even more important. In the past a few dominant players could be relied on to carry the mantle for the industry but it is a bit of a burden for singularly any of the smaller players to pick up.
As to what govt should do – that question taxes me. Certainly they should concentrate on what individuals (companies) can not do, or does not make sense to do, individually but which results in a net benefit for the state or nation.
The very first step is to make sure when strategy is being discussed for manufacturing, research and the economy that the Electronics Industry is at the table and understood.
